Seeing the World in High Definition with Flat Screen HDTV Televisions

Years ago, the only high definition televisions (HDTV) were bulky rear projection sets which had finicky or unreliable parts that were as likely to break after only a year than work flawlessly. They also cost an arm and a leg, making it difficult to justify as anything but an indulgence for those with plenty of disposable income.

A few years ago, two new technologies were introduced that would forever change how we all watch high definition content. Old rear projection televisions looked like they belonged in the distant past compared to the new plasma and liquid crystal display (LCD) televisions that had a  sleek and futuristic appearance.

Furthermore flat screen hdtv televisions weigh less and use a fraction of the energy of the older style televisions, but there are several differences you should be aware of before making a purchasing decision.

Plasma and LCD

Plasma and LCD flat screen hdtv televisions are fairly different from one another, although they can both display the highest resolution high definition content today or 1080p video. They are both very slim comparatively to rear projection televisions, and use less power. However, for image quality, video enthusiasts tend to like plasma flat screen hdtv televisions more because of their higher contrast ratio (how many different shades of a color which can be displayed so that colors can be deeper or lighter). Most people claim that plasma screens can get deeper blacks, which improve the overall image quality of the whole picture.

LCD flat screen hdtv televisions in recent years have nearly reached the contrast ratio of plasma screens though, and they are generally much cheaper than plasma televisions as well. In years past, LCD screens were not as large as plasma screens, but this has also changed in recent years so that LCD flat screen hdtv televisions can reach sizes or 60” (five feet diagonally) or even larger. Also, both technologies have matured, and as with all other technologies (computers, for example), LCDs and plasma screens have dramatically fallen in price to the point where they are a fraction of what they used to cost.

However, some new exciting technologies are about to be released which are set to beat plasma and LCD flat screen hdtv televisions in terms of power usage and image quality. The most talked about one is the organic light-emitting diode (OLED). Not only will they draw significantly less power and produce better visuals, but they can also be used with many different materials, and they are expected to be significantly cheaper to produce, resulting in greater affordability for the consumer.

There is far more high definition content available to watch these days. Apart from DVDs, many terrestrial and satellite TV stations are broadcasting in HD. There is a gentle push on consumers to update their televisions by extolling the virtues of HD broadcasting thus it is only a matter of time before most people will have some kind of technology that allows them to view HD quality content.  If you are looking to watch high definition content, look no further than flat screen hdtv televisions.

Whats a home theater and home theater ideas ? Surprisingly, the term home theater in the 19th century might have been reserved for the upper classes and even royalty. Going back to the 1800’s and before, many royal families had home theaters in their palaces in order to see the latest plays or music being performed. They would invite their subjects and large families to come and enjoy an evening of home theater.

These same royal families would compete with other royals in home theater ideas to see who could come up with the most innovative home theater. This was a pretty elaborate and expensive way to entertain people and certainly only for the very wealthy or privileged. The final scene in Hamlet is a perfect example of a Royal home theater and you couldn’t get a more realistic ending – reality TV’s got nothing on it.

With the advent of cinema, watching elaborate plays or films came within the grasp of much of the population. It quickly became a popular form of entertainment. Each theater tried to outdo it’s competition by making the film experience more real to it’s patrons. So in the early days, they might have had a live piano score to accompany the film (that was silent). Way out ideas like putting electric currents in the cinema goers seats to zap them when a shocking (sorry) scene happened was another outlandish ‘innovation’. Today, things like 3d films or Imax screens are used to improve the cinema goers experience.

At this stage, home theaters that showed films were still pretty much reserved for people that had a large disposable income. A home theater would be a replica of the movie theaters that people flocked to. The home theater would have a mini projector and a small screen. It may have a few chairs or maybe more. Not many people could afford such a home theater or even thought about it as a way to entertain themselves. People still liked to share the movie going experience with others. They liked to join in the laugh or the scream with other people.

With the increase in the quantity of films and entertainment now available. The relatively cheap media to store these forms of entertainment on. And finally, the technology to create a high quality sound and vision experience, the home theater started to take off. People turned on to watching what they wanted when they wanted. Movie attendances declined. Cinema screen sizes got smaller. The home theater went mainstream.

Even ten years ago, a home theater was a luxury item that was aimed at people with plenty of money to spend. Nowadays the costs have come down so much that most people can afford some kind of home theater setup.

Today

Home theater ideas have evolved into what they are today. Everyone would like to be entertained in their homes and what better way then with a home theater. Home theater ideas are in abundance now and companies compete from home theater furniture to sound equipment to high tech screens.

It is quite a lucrative business and the company with the most innovative home theater ideas is the company who makes the most money. It is fun to have your own home theater and the ideas that are put into designing them can be very creative. Whether you hire a special home theater company to design your theater or you create your own design, home theater ideas run the gamut from straight forward theater to eccentric and ostentatious creations.
